Abstract

This article is a review of recent research on pregnancy-related low back pain. Between 48% and 56% of women develop symptoms of low back pain at some point during pregnancy. In one third of these women, the symptoms are of such severity that impact dramatically on the activities of daily living and frequently require prolonged bedrest.

Some studies have found that heavy labor, smoking, parity, age, previous history of low back pain are risk factors for development of low back symptoms during pregnancy. Several biomechanical and physiologic changes during pregnancy contribute to back pain. Back pain and posterior pelvic pain pregnancy could be identified as two different pain types that developed differently with time and delivery by some researchers. It is recommended these types of pain should be managed differently. Pregnant women should be included in prenatal education and other education program as soon as back or pelvic pain appears.

Based on this articles, a prospective study is being designed to identify the predictive factors for successful management and prevention of low back pain. It argues for a more active approach to prevention and management of low back pain during pregnancy.
